Joe Rosenthal

The photojournalist whose photo of  5 Marines and a sailor raising an American flag over Iwo Jima died on Sunday August 20th, 2006.  He was 94.  Rosenthal took the photo on February 23rd, 1945 while covering the battle on Iwo for the Associated Press. His photo not only captured a stunning moment in American history, it also captured the essence of the American soldier.

Rosenthal died of natural causes according to his daughter, Anne Rosenthal. Joe wasn't a Seabee, but he surely had our CAN DO attitude.    Thank You, Joe, for having the presence to capture this moment in history.
